The Head of Domestic Tax will have significant responsibility for the Company’s corporate tax issues.  This challenging position will include oversight of a team of tax professionals covering financial reporting and tax compliance processes as well as corporate tax planning.  This position will report to Head of Tax.  This position will serve a key role in the management of the tax department and development of the Company’s strategic tax goals. Located in our Boston, MA or Hartford, CT office, the candidate will need to be a motivated, diligent, detail-oriented, and organized person with strong skills in communication, people management, and technical tax matters.  Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Provide advice to business units concerning the tax impacts of new initiatives and transactions;
    • Work closely with investment and reinsurance teams as they examine business opportunities;
  • Monitor and analyze new tax laws and regulations for their impact upon the Company; communicate and educate as appropriate; guide implementation efforts where required;
  • Oversight of the corporate tax compliance effort. Confirm timeliness and completeness of process, ensure collaboration with other departments across the organization to gather data for tax return preparation;
  • Supervise the preparation of quarterly and annual tax provisions for financial statements including gathering data, analyzing results, and communicating outcomes; Ensure compliance with ASC 740 and all NAIC rules;
  • Oversee relationship with financial statement auditors and coordinate the proper response for document requests;
  • Maintain tax controls and drive operational efficiency;
  • Engage with trade and industry groups to maintain awareness of current issues;
  • Manage any external audits from taxing jurisdictions;
  • Perform analytical review of periodic results and communicate to finance team;


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, or equivalent work experience; CPA and Master’s degree in Taxation or JD strongly preferred
  • Prior experience in large corporate tax department or public accounting; 15+ years with significant focus on life insurance issues and reinsurance; demonstrated progression in responsibilities
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate technical issues across diverse population
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, train, and mentor staff;
  • Ability to work across the organization, building positive relationships
  • Proactive with a vision to identify issues before they become problems
